Here is a picture of me getting some socially distanced air during my quarantine.
My fitness journey. How and why I decided to heal others.
I started my career at Crunch Fitness Gym in Park Slope, Brooklyn. 3 years later, I was hired as the assistant manager and Personal Trainer at Fitness Together, a personal training studio. When that studio changed ownership, I started my own traveling fitness instruction business, called Bene-Fits P.T.
I have been self-employed for 11 years. I decided not to open up my own studio because many of my clients
have issues with mobility. It makes my clients lives so much easier when I can come to them.
In May of 2017, I noticed that my hip hurt and my gait was off. I thought it was just an over use injury,
common in my field. When I saw my first X-rays of my injured hip, I was dismayed. I had bone-on-bone arthritis, most likely due to scoliosis that I have had my whole life. On October 25th, 2019, I underwent hip replacement surgery at the Hospital for Special Surgery. My surgeon, Dr. McLawhorn, is a total genius. He gave me a new hip and straightened out my scoliosis by making one of my legs a little longer during my operation.
I wrote this piece for a website that posts fitness related interviews. Here is the first part of the interview.
Hello Fitness Fans,
My name is Sharissa Reichert, and I am one of the most popular trainers in Brooklyn, NY for Senior Population.
I am 53 years old and have a 24 year old son, who is a Chef in Upstate New York. I am married to G.F. Newland who is a children’s book illustrator and a musician.
I have been in the Fitness Industry since 2002. I lost my good job after 9/11 and ended up working part time as a babysitter at a gym.
After 6 months working at the gym, I decided to make fitness my new career. I noticed that many of my health problems started to disappear after I started training. I wanted to show others the joys of the gym so I got my Personal Training Certification. When a new client says to me “I am not a gym person” I tell them, “Neither am I. The only difference between you and me is a few years of practice. I was not a gym person at one time too. I know what it’s like to walk into a gym, wonder what all of this equipment is, see all these buff people around and feel out of my element. I have been there.”
There are 3 things that I am a real pro at, home exercise, home exercise equipment, and healthy eating on a budget. Get some tips and tricks from me every Wednesday day at 11:00am over Face Book live on my page:
Check out my new LiveStream show “Gear Head ” where I talk about workout gear, exercise equipment and workout clothes. The show goes live every Wednesday at 11:00am. I do the show live and straight off the cuff. I am having a good time with this LiveStream, I get to show how much I know and give the public good easy ideas for home exercise On the next episode of Gear Head, I pull out all of the stops and talk about Glide Boards and nutritional yeast.
How are we going to get enough physical activity during this time when we should not go out? We are all making sacrifices to save lives. We need to stay healthy too. With my upstairs neighbors encouragement ( she dose the stairs every day!) I went up and down 4.5 flights of stairs 25 times. My exercise buddies ran, but I am not allowed to do any high impact activities. My doc says the new hip will last for 30 years if I am carful with it.
We are all home cooking a little more often these days. We might be serving all 3 meals for more than 1 person more often. This is good time to experiment with cooking. Try a new recipe. Cook that thing that you always wanted to cook but had no time to cook it. I am using food grade essential oils in my cooking to add some bolder flavors to my dishes. No preservatives , chemicals food additives, or old dry spices are just a few the good things about cooking with essential oils. I use Young Living oils. They are the superior product in the big world of Essential Oils.
Happy Monday Everyone!
This weekend I celebrated 6 months since I got my hip replaced. I am so happy with the way the scar came out. Many people who have this procedure have a scar that is 8 to 12 inches long along the side of their bodies. I got the latest state of the art procedure.
I have been streaming these off the cuff, stream of consciousness if you will videos about fitness and nutrient dense foods. I decided to create videos for my friends during the Social Distancing phase of humans dealing with the pandemic. I got such a good response I made them all official. Enjoy and learn with me every Wednesday at 11 on my Face Book Page.
